Everyday in rescue is a struggle and pulls at your heartstrings. Quite often it is truly difficult to pull yourself up, dust off the boots and keep trudging forward, but we have to. Capacity is at an all time high in Shelters everywhere and as we all know, the need far out-weighs the capacity. So what can we do? The minute you pick up the phone and hear that yet another pitbull, or pit mix is in need of a home, your heart sinks. The preconceived notion that these dogs all possess a particular behavior is just not true. I have known some to be the most loving and goofy, and others to be problems. But I can say that about ALL types of dogs, from the tiniest to the largest.
Everytime I hear of a sweet and loving pitbull, I am brought to the memory of my own sweet and departed, Kuda. Kuda was the best, goofiest and most loving adventurer. I often tell folks that he was like Scooby Doo. Kuda was a red nose pit with a zest for life and a love for humans that was unmeasurable. Kuda would see my niece and nephew off to school on the bus and welcome them home when the bus made it to the stop. We all have fond memories of Kudaboy and I can honestly say that my life was made better by knowing and loving him. My wish is that someone will read this, set judgement and preconceived notions aside regarding a specific breed of dog, and consider adopting to give them a chance to prove that Love does not discriminate, and neither should we. Love truly does come in all sizes and breeds. And before I go...I will leave you with this one thing....of all my years of loving dogs, the only dog I was ever truly bitten by was a Chihuahua!
